Makeshift Shelter Saves 30 Dogs an Hour

  • A pop-up shelter in Brazil is saving hundreds of dogs from raging floodwaters.

  • In a space the size of a soccer field, rescue workers are masterfully helping an overwhelming number of stray dogs.

  • Sequential bouts of rain are expected in the region, so the shelter’s work becomes increasingly important.

Black Miniature Poodle Wins Best in Show

  • A Miniature Poodle named Sage has won best in show at the 2024 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

  • This could be a good thing for black dogs and cats, removing the needless stigmas associated with them.

  • Black dogs and cats take four times longer to be adopted in shelters, and even though dogs like sage aren’t likely to end up in shelters, the color of his fur could chip away at the “black dog syndrome” and “black cat” stigmas.

Robot Entertains Cats, Learns Personalities

  • Cat Royale is an artificial intelligence device that learns about a cat’s personality to better entertain it, feed it, and keep it company.

  • The company has a video series on cats living for a period of time with these robots under observation (much like the show Big Brother)

  • Could this eventually be an alternative to pet sitters?

Fire Teams Equipped to Help Pets

  • A British fire response team has fitted their trucks with pet masks, muzzles, leads, and wipes made for cats and dogs.

  • This is an encouraging step, as firefighters don’t always have an obligation to pets.

  • This is at odds with many people’s personal feelings, as most of us wouldn’t hesitate to put ourselves in that situation to save our pets.

Keep an Eye on Your Scuba Pooch
Not all dogs are great swimmers

Remember These Tips:

  • Even great swimmers struggle, so don’t lose sight of your dog when they’re in the water. Also note that dogs don’t automatically know how to get out of the water, especially in pools.

  • Dog life jackets exist, and they could prevent your dog from getting overwhelmed in the water. This dog life jacket has almost 40,000 reviews with a 4.5-star rating.

  • Most pet drowning incidents are caused by exhaustion, not the inability to swim. A life jacket greatly reduces the chance of this happening.

  • You don’t drink lake water, and neither should your dog! Dogs don’t have the resilient stomachs & immune systems that wolves do. Drinking lake water exposes them to giardiasis, pythiosis, and other harmful bacteria that could make them very sick.

  • Beware the other furry critters. Campsites, lakes, & riverside beaches are home to critters that are excellent at hiding from humans, but dogs can sniff them out. If your dog wanders into a badger’s burrow or crosses paths with a river rat, you’re in for a trip to the vet.

Bug Spray Bugs Pets
Unless it’s made for them

  • Dogs and cats are both very sensitive to DEET.

  • DEET can cause neurological issues, tremors, shakes, seizures, vomiting, and more.

  • There are pet-safe bug sprays without DEET.

  • Citronella is toxic to dogs in all forms, so avoid using citronella candles at your gathering. Being in the proximity of citronella for a short period won’t harm your dog, but they’ll be affected if they get up close and sniff or lick it.

How Hot is Too Hot for Dogs?
If you’re hot, imagine how your pet feels

When you feel yourself getting a tan, it probably means your dog is getting hot. All dogs are a little different, so it’s important to keep a close eye on their behavior.

  • 90 degrees is too hot. This is the point at which all dogs could start to get dehydrated and the risk of heatstroke increases.

  • 80 to 90 degrees is risky. If it’s in the 80s, make sure your dog has plenty of water, shade, and the ability to rest. At this temperature, you should also make sure your dog isn’t outside for more than a few hours max - even if they seem to be doing fine.

  • Some dogs are at higher risk. Key factors that increase vulnerability to heat include obesity, brachycephalic breeds, and heart conditions.
