🐾 Husky Thinks She's a Bunny 🐇
+ A Poem to Touch Your Heart

Hey, Petlovers!
We want to kick off this week’s issue by introducing you to an icon.
No.. she isn’t a dog. She isn’t a cat, either.
She’s a baby pygmy hippo named Moo Deng. We’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t show her to you, because she is one of the cutest tiny animals ever born.
Even Herbie, who thought he was the cutest baby ever born, agrees that Moo Deng is pretty dang adorable.
Here’s what’s in store this week:

Husky is a Bunny at Heart

Belle is a Husky whose maternal instinct isn’t restricted by size or species.
In particular, she has a deep love for bunnies. She’ll sneakily open a bunny’s cage, crawl in, and close it behind her!
Once she gets near her bunny siblings, she curls up and snuggles them to no end.
She was curled up around a blind Chihuahua on the street when she was rescued. The two street companions were out on their own together, and Belle did what she had to do to protect her friend.
Now, she’s just a wonderful dog who snuggles and protects every creature she meets.

PAWS Act Could Help Americans with Vet Costs

A new bipartisan bill called the PAWS Act may allow pet owners to use tax-advantaged health savings accounts to pay for pet medical expenses.
The law would allow pet owners to use accounts to save up to $1,000 toward future veterinary care or pet insurance.
This could open up new doors for emergency expenses and rising veterinary costs for our best friends, who we would no doubt go into debt for if we had to.
This law could help pet owners like us have options to cover our pets’ expenses.
Worried about vet bills?
We’ve helped make it simple for pet parents to submit a claim and get reimbursed for eligible vet bills in just a few days.*

For I Will Consider My Dog Percy
by Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver & Her Dog
We thought we’d mix it up this week with a poem written by Mary Oliver. We think her writing sums up a feeling about dogs that we all have — a great respect and admiration for the goofiness, the courage, the compassion, and the sense of true love that can only be found in pets.
Here it is:
For I will consider my dog Percy.
For he was made small but brave of heart.
For if he met another dog he would kiss her in kindness.
For when he slept he snored only a little.
For he could be silly and noble in the same moment.
For when he spoke he remembered the trumpet and when he scratched he struck the floor like a drum.
For he ate only the finest food and drank only the purest of water, yet he would nibble of the dead fish also.
For he came to me impaired and therefore certain of short life, yet thoroughly rejoiced in each day.
For he took his medicines without argument.
For he played easily with the neighbor’s Bull Mastiff.
For when he came upon mud he splashed through it.
For he was an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.
For he listened to poems as well as love-talk.
For when he sniffed it was as if he were being pleased by every part of the world.
For when he sickened he rallied as many times as he could.
For he was a mixture of gravity and waggery.
For we humans can seek self-destruction in ways he never dreamed of.
For he took actions both cunning and reckless, yet refused always to offer himself to be admonished.
For his sadness though without words was understandable.
For there was nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.
For there was nothing brisker than his life when in motion.
For he was of the tribe of Wolf.
For when I went away he would watch for me at the window.
For her loved me.
For he suffered before I found him, and never forgot it.
For he loved Anne. For when he lay down to enter sleep he did not argue about whether or not God made him.
For he could fling himself upside down and laugh a true laugh.
For he loved his friend Ricky.
For he would dig holes in the sand and then let Ricky lie in them.
For I often see his shape in the clouds and this is a continual blessing.

Dogs in Backpacks are Restoring Wildlife
They’re tapping into their roots.
A long, long time ago, Wolves would walk through the woods unknowingly collecting seeds in their fur. As they marched long distances, those seeds would shake off and spread wildflowers and plants across the land.
One community is joining in that tradition by strapping backpacks laden with wildflower seeds to their dogs and going for walks in nature. The result is something that benefits the dogs, their humans, and our environment.
Family’s 4 Dogs Protect Young Boy in The Woods
They were lost for 16 hours
A 4-year-old boy and his family’s four dogs were lost for 16 hours this week after the boy followed “hoppy things” into the woods. The family learned that he was wandering after bunnies.
A large search effort lasted 16 hours, and the boy was found 3 miles from home being protected by his four dogs. Everyone is safe, but the area is home to wildlife that could have been dangerous had the pack of dogs not been doing their duty.
Cat Works as Fire Chief for 10 Years
His name is Flame.
Flame took his role as fire chief very seriously. He would check trucks, sit on the tailboard of fire trucks supervising the crew, and generally overseeing his department in a very professional manner.
Flame’s story goes to show how a stray kitten can enter even the most serious of situations and take control. Learn more about Flame below.
