They say cats joined humans just over 10,000 years ago, right around the time we started farming. Crop stores attracted a parade of little vermin that served as an all-you-can-eat buffet for our feline friends. Thatā€™s what they say.

But hereā€™s the true origin story:

Cats arrived the first time someone set a glass of water on the table and walked to the other room. Instantly, a cat pounced through the window, made a beeline for the table, and stared intently at the cup.

This little pioneer softly nudged the cup. Then again. And again.

When it finally tumbled down and shattered, he strode confidently to the human and demanded a belly rub. That day, cats domesticated themselves.
