Speaking of perking up, are there any coffee drinkers out there? Your morning Joe sure would taste better in a Lola & Herbie coffee cup

Strange Pet Behaviors - Should You Be Worried?

If you’ve ever worried about your pet’s strange behavior, it’s important to remember that there might be a perfectly natural reason for their actions.

Animals always have a reason for doing the things they do, but as humans, we don’t necessarily understand those motives.

We love our pets, so it’s only natural to worry about their well-being, especially when they begin exhibiting behaviors which might seem odd or distressed. Yet most of the time, there’s a perfectly natural and logical explanation – from the animal’s perspective, anyway!

“I Wish I Could Talk to Them
”

If your pet could talk back to you, the one phrase it would probably use most of all would be ‘I’m okay’. Cats and dogs are often restricted in their ability to do things we take for granted; whereas we can scratch an itchy back, they might need to roll around on the floor.

You might think they’re breakdancing, whereas in reality they’re just enjoying some relief from itching.

This brings us onto some seemingly odd behaviors that make perfect sense from an animal’s perspective

We’ll look at two common dog quirks, followed by two common cat quirks and find out if there’s anything to worry about.

 Odd Behaviors in Dogs

#1
Staring Into Space
(for a little too long)

Is there a ghost in the room? Is your dog having a mild stroke? In reality, it’s probably concentrating on something.

Dogs have incredibly sharp senses of smell and hearing, so they may have smelled or heard something interesting.

While concentrating on a sound or scent trail too faint for a human to detect, they might exhibit a blank expression and oddly still body language.

#2
Chasing Their Tails
Funny, but strange.

Watching a dog chase its tail is comedic to begin with, but it can quickly become a distressing sight.

In truth, many dogs like the adrenaline rush of spinning round in circles, which lets them expel some energy and demonstrate their excitement.

It can occasionally signal boredom or anxiety, but this is unlikely to be the case if your dog is well-walked and has toys to play with.

 Odd Behaviors in Cats

#1
Coughing Up Hairballs
Why does it have to be so dramatic?

Every cat owner is familiar with that horrible ‘hup hup’ noise as their pet prepares for a good hurl. However, vomiting is natural in cats – they’ll deliberately eat grass (which is an emetic) to help bring up something that’s causing digestive discomfort.

Their barbed tongues tend to ingest a lot of hair which often needs to come out as a pellet, and they tend to feel better within seconds of vomiting – though beware the encore of a second round!

#2
Disappearing
(It’d be easier to find Bigfoot!)

Cat owners often strategically position beds around the house, only to find their pet squashed into a corner or lurking inside a wardrobe.

Cats love dark hiding places where their excellent night vision comes into its own, and being confined affords them a sense of protection. Don’t be concerned if your cat makes a beeline for boxes or bags – they just like being hidden.

General Rule of Thumb
“When Should I Call the Vet?”

Nobody knows your pet better than you do.

If your cat or dog begins acting oddly, it might simply be a new behavior or a response to new stimuli – but you’re in the best position to tell if their actions seem agitated or unduly repetitive. Your vet will be happy to talk through your animal’s behavior, and advise whether it’s worth getting them checked out – for your own peace of mind as much as anything.
