Oscar, the Cat Who Brought Comfort

This is the true story of a cat who had the uncanny ability to comfort people in their last days.

A Quiet Guardian at Steere House

In the serene halls of Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rhode Island, an unassuming tabby cat named Oscar became an unlikely hero. Adopted as a kitten, Oscar had a calm demeanor, spending much of his time lounging on windowsills or napping in the sunlight. But over time, staff and residents noticed something extraordinary about himā€”Oscar seemed to know when a patient was nearing the end of their life.

Quietly, he would enter the room of a dying resident, settle next to them, and stay by their side until their final moments. His silent companionship brought a profound sense of peace and reassurance during lifeā€™s most delicate transition.

It wasnā€™t just a fluke, either. Oscar visited & comforted over 100 people during their last moments.

Comfort in Final Moments

Oscarā€™s ability to sense when a patient was passing defied explanation. While he wasnā€™t particularly sociable during the day, he showed an unwavering sense of purpose during these poignant moments.

Families overwhelmed by the emotional weight of saying goodbye found comfort in Oscarā€™s presence. For patients without nearby family, Oscarā€™s companionship ensured they were never alone. He became a quiet witness to their lives, offering a final gesture of love and connection.

A Mystery of Compassion

While no one knows exactly how Oscar could predict death, some speculate that his heightened senses allowed him to detect changes in body chemistry or pheromones. Others believe his intuition was purely emotional, as though he could sense the energy of those in need.

Regardless of the science, Oscarā€™s actions spoke to something universal: the innate ability of animals to connect with humans on a deeply emotional level.

Dr. David Dosa, a geriatrician at Steere House, documented Oscarā€™s gift in the New England Journal of Medicine and later in his book, Making Rounds with Oscar. These accounts brought Oscar international attention and made him a symbol of the profound bond between humans and animals.

In a world often marked by noise and chaos, Oscarā€™s small but meaningful actions showed the power of simply being there for someone in need. He taught us that love and empathy transcend words, leaving a legacy that endures long after the final goodbye.

Watch Oscarā€™s story and meet him by watching the video below.

Bernese Mountain Dog Rescued with Drone

Charlie, a 2-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog set out on an adventure last week. He must of have been chasing an animal because it was unusual for him to bolt like he did that chilly afternoon.

His family started searching immediately, rounding up neighbors and friends to try and look for two full days with no luck. Thatā€™s when they tried to recruit help ā€” drone operators.

They found Mike Smith, a man who uses thermal drone technology to find lost pets. It had been 7 days, so it would take a miracle to find him.

After 50 minutes, Mike Smithā€™s drone found Charlie laying on a snowy hillside, gazing up at the drone from a comfortable position. The moment that the drone found him is caught on camera, so click below to watch the beautiful moment when Charlieā€™s family realizes heā€™ll be coming home safe.
