šŸ’Œ Potato Dog's Weight Lose Journey

+ The ABCs of Healthy Dog Diets

Hey, Petlovers!

If Lola & Herbie had it their way, we would fill their food bowls with treats. Theyā€™d eat off of our plates, too. We know, however, that this style of eating would cause a number of problems for our furry friends.

Our featured video this week is a dog named Pierogi who looks like ā€œa baked potato on legsā€ because her previous owners showered her with treats. Pierogi is the sweetest dog, but she has to embark on a 50 pound weight loss journey.

This had us thinking, what are the healthiest ways to feed our pets to keep them in tip-top shape? Plus, what can you do if your pet could stand to shed a few pounds? Youā€™ll find it all below!

Heartwarmers
Baked Potato Dogā€™s Weight Loss Journey

  • Pierogi is a sweet girl who turned up at the shelter without a clear back story. The only thing that was clear is that she was very overweight - clocking in at around 110 pounds.

  • To make matters more complicated, Pierogi is 10 years old.

  • In every other way, she was healthy as could be. As a senior dog, she needed to get into shape to enjoy her golden years, but her overall health and happiness was doing just fine.

  • Meet Pierogi below and see how her new foster mom is helping her get in shape.

Dog Protects Family from Bear Attack šŸ•

  • A Northern Ontario family encountered a bear on a walk last week.

  • It was a mother, daughter, and their large dog. The bear was ready to charge, and the daughter was caught up in the dogā€™s leash.

  • After getting untangled, their dog leapt into action and intimidated the bear, causing it to flee and protecting their family.

The ABCs of Healthy Eating for Pets

Understanding the right amount of food for your pet is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding issues like obesity or malnutrition. Hereā€™s a basic breakdown:

Dogs:

The amount a dog needs depends on factors like breed, age, size, and activity level. A general rule is about 25-30 calories per pound of body weight per day, which typically translates to about 1 to 3 cups of dry food per day, depending on the dog's size and specific food brand. Puppies and active breeds may need more, while senior or less active dogs need fewer calories.

Cats:

Cats require around 20-30 calories per pound of body weight per day, which typically translates to about 1/4 to 3/4 cups of dry food per day, depending on the cat's size and specific food brand. Free-feeding (leaving food out all day) can lead to overeating, so measured meals are often a better approach.

  • Treats: Treats should make up no more than 10% of your petā€™s daily calorie intake. Look for healthy options like small pieces of cooked lean meats, vegetables, or pet-specific treats with minimal additives.

Things to Look for in a Healthy Pet Food

Selecting the best food for your pet can be overwhelming, but focusing on quality ingredients can make all the difference.

Hereā€™s what to look for when selecting your dog or catā€™s food:

  • High-Quality Protein: Look for whole meat sources like chicken, beef, salmon, or turkey as the first ingredient. Avoid vague terms like "meat by-products."

  • Healthy Fats: Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (from sources like fish oil or flaxseed) support skin, coat, and brain health.

  • Essential Nutrients: Ensure the food contains necessary vitamins and minerals, including taurine for cats and glucosamine for larger dog breeds.

  • Limited Fillers: Avoid unnecessary fillers like corn, wheat, and soy, which provide little nutritional value and can cause digestive issues in some pets.

  • No Artificial Additives: Avoid artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, which can trigger allergies and long-term health concerns.

When in doubt, consult with your veterinarian to ensure youā€™re choosing a balanced diet tailored to your petā€™s specific needs.

Things to Avoid in When Shopping for Pet Food

Not all pet food is created equal. Some ingredients can be harmful or provide little nutritional value. Be cautious of:

  • Artificial Preservatives (BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin): These additives have been linked to potential health risks.

  • Excess Carbohydrates: While some carbs are fine, too many grains and starches can contribute to weight gain and blood sugar issues.

  • Unidentified Meat Sources: Ingredients labeled as "animal meal" or "meat by-products" can contain low-quality proteins.

  • Harmful Sweeteners: Xylitol (toxic to dogs), artificial sweeteners, and excessive sugar can be dangerous and lead to obesity or diabetes.

  • Excessive Sodium: Too much salt can lead to dehydration and high blood pressure in pets.

Reading labels and choosing high-quality ingredients can make a significant difference in your petā€™s long-term health.

Complement a Healthy Diet with Exercise

A proper diet is only part of a petā€™s healthā€”regular exercise is just as crucial. Hereā€™s how to keep your pet active:

  • Dogs: Most dogs need 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise daily, depending on breed and age. Activities can include:

    • Walks and runs

    • Fetch and agility training

    • Swimming and hiking

    • Interactive toys and puzzle feeders for mental stimulation

  • Cats: Cats need at least 15-30 minutes of activity per day to prevent obesity and boredom. Try:

    • Laser pointers and feather wands

    • Climbing structures and scratching posts

    • Interactive toys that encourage chasing and pouncing

Regular activity keeps pets physically fit, mentally stimulated, and emotionally happy. If youā€™re unsure how much exercise your pet needs, your vet can help tailor an activity plan based on their age and health condition.

Keeping Your Pet Healthy for Life

A well-balanced diet and regular exercise lay the foundation for a long, happy life for your pet. By feeding them high-quality, nutritious food, monitoring portions, and ensuring they get enough daily activity, you can help them thrive. Always consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice, and enjoy the rewarding journey of pet ownership!
