Hey, Petlovers!

Weā€™re excited to announce that Lola & Herbie finally decided to get off the couch and do some good for humanity.

Our two furry friends have teamed up with a biologist to debunk some of the pet worldā€™s ā€œtallest tailsā€ (Lola coined that one).

This is Turtllini šŸ’ž

  • This small dog was wandering the streets of L.A. with a broken hip after being hit by a car.

  • A kind stranger made a warm shelter for her, naming her Turtllini because her enclosure looked like a turtle shell.

  • She responded to kindness beautifully, allowing rescuers to take her in and give her a warm bed.

  • Watch how wonderful her personality turns out to be, proving that dogs of all circumstances are blessed with compassionate and loving souls.

An 18-Year-Old Dogā€™s Mission to Enjoy Life

  • Nanna is 18, blind & deaf, and was given only a few months to live three years ago in Nashville before relocating to Minnesota.

  • She and her owner crossed a river bridge on a casual walk, and Nanna stopped. She sniffed the wind on her face and ā€œshe was just captivated".

  • Through all of her struggles, she had never been so still and at peace.

  • Her ownerā€™s mission is now to take her on every bridge in Minnesota, keeping her healthy on long hikes and allowing her to enjoy the final years of her life. Her owner hopes this will inspire more people to adopt senior pets, proving that they have a lot of love and life to give.

Rome Shelters Host ā€œDog Paradeā€ to Spotlight Adoptable Animals

  • Dog kennels in Rome are making ā€œDog Paradesā€ monthly events.

  • Their first parade allowed shelter dogs to stretch their legs while exposing them to thousands of people who might not have otherwise seen them.

SNIFFBUSTERS:
Can Dogs Read Our Minds?

Written by Biologist, Genevieve Dugal

Ask any dog parent, and they'll likely tell you that their beloved pup understands when they're feeling down, angry, sad, or stressed.

In other words, their dog seems to show genuine empathy. But to what extent do dogs actually understand human emotions? It's true that we all tend to anthropomorphize our pets' reactions, but is there solid scientific evidence behind dogs' ability to not only understand human emotions but also use that information to adjust their own behavior?

That is our aim for today: to explore, based on the latest scientific research available, whether or not dogs comprehend emotions and respond with genuine understanding.

A Millennial Bond

ā€œOog finds a puppy basketā€

For over 10,000 years, dogs have been evolving alongside us. This long history has given rise to a deep, complex, and truly unique relationship. Because, unlike any other domestic animal, dogs have developed sophisticated ways to interact with people, forging a connection that is nothing short of extraordinary.

Indeed, this co-evolution has enabled dogs to become exceptionally skilled at reading human communicative cues, such as pointing and looking, even from a young age or with minimal human experience.

dogs can pick up on many of our facial expressions.

Research also reveals that our canine friends are sensitive to a variety of human emotional expressions, including body postures, facial expressions, vocalizations, and even scents.

Dogs Understand Us Better Than We Thought

But whatā€™s even more interesting is that this sensitivity allows them to respond appropriately to different emotional states, which, in return, significantly influences their own behavior.

For instance, dogs can discern between friendly and threatening gestures and use this information to decide how to act. In further studies, dogs have also shown they can anticipate emotional cues to find hidden food or choose between objects based on simple gestures or facial expressions.

This ability to recognize and anticipate the consequences of emotional expressions enables our canine companions to have more balanced interactions in different social contexts.

Dogs understand us deeply

It also highlights the depth of their social intelligence and the evolutionary advantages of such skills. That means that understanding the potential behavioral outcomes of people's emotions helps them make appropriate choices, respond effectively, and engage in more successful social interactions.

One Last Thought

The belief that our most loyal and cherished four-legged companions understand our feelings isn't just based on stories; many studies show that dogs can recognize how humans feel and use that to act appropriately.

This skill gives dogs an advantage in evolution, and it's quite important for their social lives. They watch us closely, learn from what they see, and change how they behave based on that.

This remarkable ability shows how unique and complex the bond between humans and dogs really is, and itā€™s something that will likely never cease to amaze us.
